touche turtle

for those of you who don't know was a cool cartoon i used to watch when growing up. here was this turtle with a sword and funny hat and he used to go around fighting bad guys with a companion who was a moose - don't ask. Needless to say the turtles on turtle island don't do that. However they are doing very well. Immediately we stepped off the boat we nearly landed on a baby turtle. Don't hold out much hope for him as they are released at night and at 10.30 am he was still swimming around in the shallows. Never mind, hopefully all his friends will have made it.

A lazy day followed. LOTS of sun cream applied by all as we played volley ball in the sea, sun bathed, floated around and snorkelled. Simon, Tom and Emma won the snorkelling prize as they saw the grown up turtle, however the clams, sea cucumbers, catfish, rainbow fish etc were all very cool. And of course many funny sounds of excitement through snorkels were heard when Claire saw the 'Nemo' fish (clown fish of course!)

Evening saw us all meet up for drinks, dinner and an informative turtle video before being called to see our turtle lay its eggs at about 9.30pm. After that we got to see the baby turtles be released into the sea. We had to guide one or two the right way as they got a bit confused. Then off to bed and ready for an early start.

6.45 am this morning and we were back in the boat heading to the mainland, then straight into a taxi to Sepilok - the OrangUtan rehabilitation centre. Made it here after a stop for yummy pastries for breakfast (a welcome change from rice and noodles!) in time for the first Orang feeding at 10.30am. It was very busy so we're going back at 3pm for another go when hopefully the day trippers won't be there. AT least the man with the large black umbrella who stood right in front of Claire hopefully won't be there - we think he got the message as Claire had an assertive moment and asked him to take the umbrella down as he was being very selfish - she even surprised herself with this request!

Back to our bed and breakfast for lunch - we've all discovered 'roti' a kind of flat bread that comes with great curry sauce for a savoury option or, sweet Kaya - an egg and coconut milk though sounds very dodgy but tastes great.

Anyway, better go now as we're being picked up at 2.45 for our return trip to the OrangUtan followed by a 4 wheel drive excursion to the Proboscus monkey sanctuary before back here for more food - I'd be worried about weight gain if we weren't sweating it off !

No picture today as I'm on the internet in the bed and breakfast, the pictures are on another of Martyns gadgets somewhere and I can't work out how to get the two together! So more tomorrow hopefully when we will be back in Kota Kinabalu getting ready to say goodbye to Sabah - can't believe we are almost exactly half way through already!

Everyone says Hi (well I'm sure they would if they were here but they've all gone off somewhere to sleep off lunch I think).

Ta Ta For Now - Kay

Thank Vicky for the email, it was lovely to hear from her. Tell her that her dad is starting work again on Monday so not to worry.

Hey,
Glad to hear you're all still having a great time, hard to believe you've already been there a week and a half! I imagine if you had a day on the beach you'll all be coming back with a great tan, no such luck here in UK though the weather is nicer than usual.
The photo of the orangutan was cute, I'm sure there are plenty more photos to come and look forward to seeing them!
Love Mum, Dad and Grace xxxx
